About Beata es Virgo Maria
This motet for SAATTBB voices sets a text honouring the Virgin Mary, often sung during Marian feasts or services. Claudio Merulo's setting draws on rich, polychoral traditions. The selected Latin text, featuring phrases from scripture and traditional Marian salutations, praises Mary as the Mother of God who carried the Creator of the world, and who remains eternally a virgin. It highlights her faith, her role as mediator, and her exalted status above the angelic choirs. The polyphony would create a grand and devotional sound, suitable for a cathedral or large church setting, reinforcing the solemnity and reverence of the liturgical occasion.
