Bata N'ime M by Janefrances Ayogo & Kingsley Ezeh — Lyrics
About Bata N'ime M
"Bata N'ime M" is a gentle, deeply reverent Igbo Communion hymn. The title translates to "Come Into Me," setting a tone of personal invitation and quiet surrender during the Eucharist. The composers marked the melody to be sung "Andante Con Tenerezza" (slowly, with tenderness), which perfectly matches the hushed, prayerful atmosphere of a congregation returning to their pews after receiving Communion.
The lyrics draw directly from Christ's teachings on the Bread of Life. The first verse recounts His promise that whoever eats His body and drinks His blood will have eternal life ("ndụ ebighebi"). In the second verse, the choir shifts from scripture to a deeply personal prayer, led initially by a solo voice. It asks Jesus to enter the communicant's heart, make them whole, and transform them to be more like Him.
For a choir director, this is an ideal piece for the moments right after the Communion procession, when the church settles into silent reflection. The repeating, pleading lines at the end of the song—"Bata, bata, bata Chi m eh!" (Come, come, come my God!)—give the choir a chance to lead the congregation in a beautiful, lingering meditation.
