About Ave verum corpus, Op. 28

For use in moments of solemn reflection, particularly during the Easter season, Pascal Picard’s Ave verum corpus is a powerful setting of a classic Marian antiphon. The text, drawn from the Liber Usualis, meditates on the sacrifice of Christ’s body, born of the Virgin Mary, who suffered and was sacrificed on the cross for humankind. The music, set for double choir (SATB.SATB), weaves the Latin text with expressive harmonies, capturing the poignant imagery of the pierced side from which flowed water and blood. The composer’s profound response to the text invites contemplation on the 'sweet Jesus', 'pious Jesus', 'Son of Mary', pleading for mercy in the hour of death.
