Johann Michael Haydn sets the familiar Latin text of the Ave Maria, a Marian antiphon, for SATB choir. The words, conveying the Angelic Salutation from Luke 1:28, speak of divine favour and blessing upon Mary. Haydn's setting is a sacred piece of considerable beauty, offering a devotional and prayerful experience for both choir and listener. This setting would serve well as a motet or anthem within a liturgical context, or as a reflective concert item.
