Ave Maria a 8 by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina — Lyrics
About Ave Maria a 8
The text of this motet is the familiar Ave Maria, the Angelic Salutation. Palestrina sets the Latin words with his characteristic clarity and flowing counterpoint. The opening phrases, "Hail full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb," are sung here for double choir, SATB divided from SATB, creating a rich sonority and opportunities for antiphonal effects. This sacred work exemplifies the polyphonic style of the Roman School at its height, with intricate yet transparent vocal lines that beautifully shape the devotional text.
