Ave Maria a 8 by Jacob Handl — Lyrics
About Ave Maria a 8
The familiar Latin text of the Ave Maria is here set in a magnificent eight-part texture by Jacob Handl. The opening words, 'Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,' are treated with expansive polyphony, creating a rich and devotional atmosphere. This motet for double choir, SATB split into two SATB groups, is a powerful example of sacred Renaissance music. Its intricate vocal writing and sonorous harmonies make it a suitable centrepiece for services or concerts, offering a profound musical meditation on the Annunciation.
