Ambulans Jesus by Maistre Jhan — Lyrics
Ambulans Jesus mare Galilaeae,
juxta mare Galilaeae,
vidit duos fratres,
Simonem qui vocatur Petrus,
et Andream fratrem ejus,
mittentes rete in mare
(erant enim piscatores)
et ait illis:
Venite post me et faciam vos
fieri piscatores hominum.

About Ambulans Jesus
Maistre Jhan sets a passage from the Gospels in this sacred motet for STTTB voices. The Latin text describes Jesus calling his first disciples, Simon Peter and Andrew, as they fish by the Sea of Galilee. They immediately leave their nets and follow him. Jesus then calls James and John, who also leave their nets and their father to follow him. The composer vividly portrays the disciples’ instant obedience and faith, with the rich five-part texture supporting the narrative of this pivotal Gospel moment.
