About Alma redemptoris

Giovanni Battista Chinelli composed this setting of the Marian antiphon Alma Redemptoris Mater for two male voices. The text, sung in Latin, is a prayer to Mary, the Mother of the Redeemer, often sung at the end of the liturgical day. It addresses her as the gate of heaven and star of the sea, asking for help for a people striving to rise after falling. The antiphon recalls Mary's miraculous conception of her holy creator, her perpetual virginity, and the angelic greeting of Ave, before pleading for mercy for sinners. Chinelli's homophonic treatment of the text allows the direct plea of the words to be clearly heard.
