About Alma Redemptoris

Francesco Soriano's setting of the Alma Redemptoris Mater is a Sacred motet for SATB choir. The Latin text is a votive antiphon, traditionally sung after Compline during Advent. It addresses Mary as the Mother of the Redeemer, the 'gate of heaven', the 'star of the sea', and asks for her help for a people 'falling and striving to rise'. The text highlights the miraculous nature of her motherhood, bearing her Creator while remaining a Virgin. It recalls the Annunciation, beginning with the angel Gabriel's Ave, and concludes with a plea for mercy for sinners. Soriano's music reflects the solemnity and devotion of this ancient Marian text.
