Adorna thalamum tuum by Pierre de Manchicourt — Lyrics

Adorna thalamum tuum, Sion, et suscipe Regem Christum: amplectere Mariam, quae est coelestis porta: [amplectere Messiam gratulare huiusce matri:] ipsa enim portat Regem gloriae novi luminis: subsistit Virgo, adducens manibus Filium ante luciferum [genitum]: quem accipiens Simeon in ulnas suas praedicavit populis Dominum eum esse vitae et mortis et Salvatorem mundi.

About Adorna thalamum tuum

Pierre de Manchicourt was a Franco-Flemish composer of the Renaissance. This motet, Adorna thalamum tuum, is a setting in Latin of a text relating to the Nativity and the Presentation in the Temple. The SATB voicing allows for rich harmonic interplay, and the composer uses the text to paint a vivid picture of Zion adorning itself for Christ's arrival, embracing Mary as the 'heavenly gate' who carries the King of glory. The music reflects the scriptural narrative of Simeon receiving the infant Jesus, recognizing him as the Saviour of the world.
