Abeuntes Pharisei consilium inierunt ut caperent Jesum in sermone,
et mittunt ei discipulos suos, cum Herodianis, dicentes:
Magister, scimus quia verax es, et viam Dei in veritate doces,
et non est tibi cura de aliquo, non enim respicis personam hominum.
Dic ergo nobis quid tibi videtur, licet censum dari Caesari an non?

About Abeuntes Pharisei
Maistre Jhan sets a dramatic Gospel episode with this motet for SATB choir. The text recounts the Pharisees' cunning attempt to trap Jesus in his words, sending their disciples and Herodians to ask if tribute should be paid to Caesar. Jesus, aware of their hypocrisy, turns their question back on them, asking whose image and inscription are on a coin. When they reply, Caesar's, he delivers his famous response: 'Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.' The composer's setting in Latin captures the intellectual and theological weight of this exchange, making it a powerful moment in sacred music.
