EMMANUEL by Lawrence Udo — Lyrics
About EMMANUEL
"Emmanuel" is a bright, through-composed choral anthem that brings the famous prophecy of Isaiah to life. Setting the familiar words "A virgin shall conceive and have a son," the piece builds a joyful anticipation that makes it a wonderful choice for Advent and Christmas liturgies. The music relies on overlapping vocal entries and joyful repetition, driving home the meaning of Emmanuel: "God with us."
For a choir, the beauty of this piece lies in its rhythmic energy and the way the voices echo one another. The soprano line leads the narrative, while the lower parts provide a steady, rhythmic foundation. As the sections intertwine, the repeated declarations create a sense of mounting celebration, perfect for the festive seasons of the Church year when we welcome the newborn King.
