About Good Friday (Holy Friday)

Good Friday brings a profound stillness to the church. The altar is stripped bare, the statues are covered, and the usual joy of our choir loft is replaced by a heavy, reverent silence. When we gather for the solemn service, especially around the three o'clock hour, we are stepping into the shadow of the cross. It is a day that asks us to sing not with triumph, but with deep sorrow and gratitude for the sacrifice made on Skull Hill.

The music we prepare for this day carries the weight of the Passion. As the congregation venerates the cross, our voices lead the chants and solemn hymns that recount the mocking, the crown of thorns, and the final breath of the Lord. We sing without the accompaniment of organs or bright instruments, relying only on the raw, human sound of the choir to echo the darkness that covered the land from the sixth to the ninth hour.

Even in this mourning, there is a reason it is called "Good" Friday. The barrier of sin is broken. As we lead the procession of witness or sing through the long afternoon service, we help the faithful hold onto the immense love wrapped in that sacrifice. The solemn notes we sing today prepare our hearts, and the hearts of everyone in the pews, for the quiet waiting of Holy Saturday and the eventual dawn of Easter.
