About Wedding Acclamation

When preparing the music for a Nuptial Mass, finding a Gospel Acclamation that speaks directly to the sacrament of marriage brings a special warmth to the liturgy. "Wedding Acclamation" does exactly this, pairing a bright, joyful "Halleluia" refrain with a beautifully set Igbo verse about divine and human love.

The piece opens with a straightforward, four-part Alleluia that is easy for the choir to pick up and for the congregation to echo. After the refrain, the verse begins in unison before blossoming into harmony. The words, "Chineke bụ ịhụnanya" (God is love), set the perfect tone before the Gospel reading. It reminds the couple and everyone gathered in the pews of the core message of Christian marriage: that we must love one another just as Christ loved us.

For choir directors, this short acclamation is a wonderful addition to a wedding repertoire. It is brief enough to keep the liturgy flowing smoothly, yet meaningful enough to highlight the sacredness of the vows about to be celebrated. The transition from the unison declaration of love into the full choir harmony gives the text a gentle, uplifting emphasis right before the priest or deacon proclaims the Gospel.
