Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi — Lyrics
About Gloria
When a choir wants to pull out all the stops for a major solemnity, Antonio Vivaldi’s "Gloria" is often the first score we reach for. From the moment the opening strings and trumpet fanfare burst into life, this piece carries an unmistakable energy. It takes the ancient, joyful words of the Mass and gives them a bright, driving rhythm that instantly lifts the spirit of the entire congregation.
What makes this work so rewarding to sing is how Vivaldi breaks the long Gloria text into distinct, manageable movements, each with its own unique character. We get to shift from the grand, full-choir exultation of the opening to the hushed, deeply moving harmonies of "Et in terra pax," and later to the beautiful, weaving lines of the soprano and alto solos. Every section asks something different of the voices, keeping rehearsals engaging and the final presentation incredibly dynamic.
Singing this setting connects us to a grand tradition of sacred choral music. Often programmed for a festive Christmas Midnight Mass, an Easter Sunday celebration, or a dedicated choral concert, the work demands our best vocal blend and breath control. It is a challenging sing, but reaching that final, triumphant "Cum Sancto Spiritu" fugue and delivering the closing "Amen" is one of the most satisfying experiences a choir can share.
