THE HOLY CITY. by Stephen Adams, arr. Sam Ojukwu — Lyrics
About THE HOLY CITY.
"The Holy City" is one of those monumental pieces that leaves a congregation in absolute awe. It takes us on a vivid, three-part journey through salvation history, beginning as a quiet solo recounting a dream of the earthly Jerusalem. We hear the echoes of Palm Sunday with the children singing their glad "Hosannas," before the mood shifts dramatically. The music darkens as the dream changes, bringing us to the cold, chilling shadow of the cross on a lonely hill.
For a choir, the true majesty of this piece lies in its final movement. The vision transforms once more, revealing the New Jerusalem beside the tideless sea—a city of open gates and endless light. When the full chorus finally joins the soloist to proclaim the triumphant refrain, "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, lift up your gates and sing," it feels like the heavens themselves are opening. It is a powerful anthem of hope and eternal victory, perfect for Palm Sunday, Christ the King, or any grand celebration of faith.
