surrexit christus by Jacques Berthier — Lyrics
About surrexit christus
"Surrexit Christus" is a joyful yet deeply meditative chant from the Taizé community, composed by Jacques Berthier. Written specifically for the Easter season, it captures the quiet, profound awe of the Resurrection. The piece is built on an ostinato, a short, repeating refrain sung continuously by the choir and congregation. As the voices layer the Latin words "Surrexit Christus, alleluia! Cantate Domino, alleluia!" (Christ is risen, alleluia! Sing to the Lord, alleluia!), the music creates a steady, prayerful rhythm that settles into the heart.
Over this continuous hum of praise, cantors sing verses drawn from the Book of Daniel, calling on all of creation to bless the Lord. From the stars of the heavens and the sun and moon, to frost, cold, fire, and heat, every element is invited into the Easter joy. The final verse brings in the "spirits and souls of the just," uniting the earthly choir with the saints in heaven.
For a Nigerian Catholic choir, this chant is a wonderful choice during Communion or as a post-Communion meditation throughout the fifty days of Easter. Because the refrain is simple and repetitive, the congregation can easily join in without needing to look at a hymnbook, allowing everyone to enter fully into the mystery of the risen Christ.
