About Hymn 107. Sermon On The Mount

"Sermon On The Mount" is a gentle, reflective setting of the Beatitudes from Matthew’s Gospel. Arranged for four-part choir by Ike Eseka from Paul Quinlan’s original melody, the piece takes the core teachings of Christ and turns them into a meditative chant. Each verse focuses on a single beatitude, repeating the opening phrase three times before delivering the promise—for instance, singing "Blessed are the poor in spirit" three times before resolving with "theirs is the kingdom of God." This repetition gives the congregation time to truly absorb the weight of the words.

When the choir moves into the refrain, the mood shifts from a solemn teaching to a joyful, personal encounter. The lyrics remind us that we are not just reading an ancient text, but standing "on that mountain, Jesus talking with us." The addition of "halleluia" brings a bright, uplifting energy to the end of each stanza. It is a wonderful choice for the Liturgy of the Word, especially when the Gospel reading features the Beatitudes, or as a communion meditation where the faithful can reflect on the call to be humble, merciful, and clean of heart.
