SANCTUS

Fr. Jude Duruaku's "Sanctus" offers a clear and accessible setting of the traditional Latin Eucharistic acclamation. Arranged entirely in solfa notation, the piece cleverly structures the ancient prayer into three distinct, repeating melodic lines. The choir sings the thrice-holy declaration, the glory of heaven and earth, and the blessing of the one who comes in the Lord's name as successive verses, before breaking into a bright, unified "Hosanna in excelsis."

For a parish choir, this layout makes rehearsals wonderfully straightforward. Because the three main sentences of the Sanctus share the same musical phrasing, singers can master the melody quickly and focus on their Latin diction and harmony. During the Mass, as the priest concludes the Preface, this setting lifts the congregation into the Liturgy of the Eucharist with a sense of reverence and joyful anticipation, anchoring the moment in the universal voice of the Church.
