SANCTUS {LIBERA} ANDANTE

The "Sanctus" is the great acclamation of praise sung by the choir and congregation at the end of the Preface, marking the threshold of the Eucharistic Prayer. In this arrangement, titled "Sanctus {Libera} Andante," Okpalaezeanya Austin sets the ancient Latin text to a reverent, flowing melody. The "Andante" tempo gives the piece a steady, walking pace, allowing the harmonies to breathe and fill the sanctuary without rushing the sacred words.

Written in tonic sol-fa for a full choir, the score builds beautifully from the solemn, repeated "Sanctus" into the bright and triumphant "Hosanna in excelsis." The second half introduces the "Benedictus," where the sopranos lead the joyful recognition of Christ coming in the name of the Lord. For Nigerian Catholic choirs, singing the Mass ordinary in Latin connects the local parish to the universal Church, bringing a deep sense of reverence and solemnity to Sunday Mass and feast days.
