It takes the universally recognized, flowing progression of Johann Pachelbel's famous Canon and marries it to the beloved Latin text of the Salve Regina. As the piece unfolds, the four equal female voices enter one by one, building that familiar, cascading harmony over a steady piano accompaniment.

The lyrics focus on the most tender invocations of the ancient prayer. The repeated, echoing calls of "Salve" (Hail) eventually give way to the gentle "O clemens, o pia, o dulcis, Maria!" (O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary). Because the melody is so well-known and the vocal lines support each other in a continuous loop, it creates a feeling of unbroken, meditative prayer.
