Praise we our God with Joy by J. Cruger — Lyrics
About Praise we our God with Joy
When we pull out the classic "Nun Danket" tune by Johann Crüger, most congregations immediately expect to sing "Now Thank We All Our God." But this alternative text, "Praise We Our God With Joy," offers our choirs a fresh way to lift up a song of thanksgiving while keeping that familiar, majestic melody that everyone in the pews already knows and loves. It is a wonderful choice for a recessional or a general hymn of praise, especially on days when the readings focus on God's providence and care.
The lyrics give us a deeply comforting image of God. Instead of just broad, cosmic praise, the verses draw us into a more intimate relationship. We sing of a "father dear" who is filled with a parent's love, and a "shepherd true" who keeps a watchful, unsleeping eye on us, his erring sheep. As a choir, bringing out the warmth in these words—especially in the second verse where He breaks the bonds of sin and speaks words of peace to our burdened hearts—can truly minister to a congregation carrying the weight of the week.
Musically, because the tune is so sturdy and well-known, we can focus our rehearsal time on the phrasing and the harmony. The final verse builds to an uplifting climax, reminding us that God's word is our lantern and His peace our comfort. It is a solid, encouraging piece that leaves the church echoing with gratitude as the Mass comes to a close.
