Pie Jesu from Requiem by Gabriel Fauré — Lyrics
About Pie Jesu from Requiem
Gabriel Fauré’s "Pie Jesu" is one of the most gentle and comforting pieces a choir can sing. Taken from his larger Requiem, this movement strips away all the heavy, frightening sounds often found in older funeral music. Instead, it offers a pure, quiet prayer for peace. When we sing "Pie Jesu, Domine, dona eis requiem" (Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest), the melody floats with a delicate, almost lullaby-like quality that brings immediate comfort to a grieving congregation.
In the choir loft, this piece requires immense control and breath support. The phrases are long and exposed, asking the singers to sustain the soft, pleading lines of "sempiternam requiem" (eternal rest) without losing the warmth in their tone. While it is famously sung by a soprano soloist, when adapted for a vocal ensemble, the harmonies must blend seamlessly to maintain that feeling of absolute stillness and reverence.
We usually bring this out for funeral Masses, All Souls' Day, or during the month of November when the Church remembers the faithful departed. It is a profound reminder of the hope we carry as Catholics. Rather than focusing on sorrow, the music lifts our eyes upward, asking the Lord to grant our loved ones a quiet, everlasting peace.
