Pie Jesu

There is a special kind of stillness that falls over the church when "Pie Jesu" begins. Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber for his Requiem Mass, this setting has found a cherished place in choir lofts everywhere. It takes the traditional Latin prayer for eternal rest and strips it down to its most tender, vulnerable core.

The piece is beautifully structured around a soaring duet—traditionally a soprano and a treble voice—floating gently over the hushed, supporting harmonies of the full choir. As the voices weave together through the pleading "Qui tollis peccata mundi" (Who takes away the sins of the world), it builds a profound sense of peace and surrender.

We often bring this out for funerals, All Souls' Day Masses, or as a deeply reflective Communion meditation. When the final "sempiternam requiem" (everlasting rest) fades into silence, it leaves both the singers and the congregation with a comforting reminder of God's eternal mercy.
