Sung just before the Gospel Acclamation on Pentecost Sunday, this hymn is a profound invocation of the Holy Spirit. The text calls upon the "father of the poor" and the "soul's most welcome guest" to descend and fill the hearts of the faithful.

For a choir, singing the sequence is one of the high points of the Pentecost liturgy. The words move beautifully through a series of petitions—asking for rest in our labour, coolness in the heat, and solace in the midst of woe.
