Oyala K'owoicho by Chen D. Terese — Lyrics
About Oyala K'owoicho
"Oyala K'owoicho" is an Idoma setting of the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God), paired on this sheet with a simple, meditative Taizé Alleluia. In the Catholic Mass, the Agnus Dei is a moment of profound petition, sung as the Eucharistic bread is broken. This setting by Chen D. Terese captures that solemnity beautifully in the Idoma language, offering a gentle, rhythmic plea for mercy and peace.
The melody of "Oyala K'owoicho" flows with a natural reverence. When the choir sings "wu men yiny'alo" (have mercy on us) and finally "wu j'ebol'alo" (grant us peace), the four-part harmony provides a grounding, comforting resolution. It is the kind of piece that helps a congregation center their hearts just before Communion, drawing on indigenous language to make the universal prayer feel deeply personal and close to home.
Following the Lamb of God, the sheet includes a classic Taizé "Alleluia" (Alleluia 17). Though typically sung before the Gospel, its inclusion here offers choirs a familiar, contemplative chant that can be woven into various parts of the liturgy. Together, these two short pieces provide a choir with accessible, spiritually rich music that enhances the prayerful atmosphere of the Mass.
