ONLY A SINNER! by Daniel Brink Towner — Lyrics
About ONLY A SINNER!
When we sing "Only A Sinner," we are reminded of the absolute core of our faith: everything we have is a gift of grace. The lyrics strip away all our usual pride and self-reliance, leaving us with the simple, humbling truth that we are saved not by our own merit, but by God's mercy. In the choir loft, this piece doesn't need overpowering volume or complex vocal acrobatics; it asks for sincerity. The words "boasting excluded, pride I abase" call for a gentle, reflective delivery that allows the congregation to truly hear the message.
This hymn finds its natural home during Lent or penitential services, where the focus is on repentance and returning to God. It also serves beautifully as a prayerful meditation after Communion. As we move into the chorus, the mood lifts slightly into a quiet, joyful testimony: "This is my story, to God be the glory." It is a moving reminder to everyone in the pews that no matter how far our footsteps may have departed, grace is always waiting to bring us back.
