Omogode r'Oghene (Lamb of God) by Gabriel Okome — Lyrics
About Omogode r'Oghene (Lamb of God)
"Omogode r'Oghene" is a reverent and deeply moving setting of the Agnus Dei in the Urhobo language. Sung during the fraction rite, just before the congregation approaches the altar for Communion, this piece carries the solemn weight of its liturgical moment. The choir leads the faithful in acknowledging Christ as the Lamb who takes away the sins of the world ("r'o si imuemu r'akpo na"), asking for His mercy and ultimately, His peace.
The arrangement by Gabriel Okome uses a steady, Largo tempo that allows the harmonies to breathe and resonate through the church. In the first two invocations, the voices move together in a unified plea for mercy ("rue don r'avwanre"). For the final invocation, the lower voices gently take the lead to call upon the Lamb of God one last time, before the entire choir joins to deliver the concluding prayer for peace ("no vw'ufuoma k'avwanre"). It is a profound, grounding moment in the Mass that prepares the hearts of the people to receive the Eucharist.
