Omieme (AFEMAI P.O.F)

"Omieme" is a beautiful, meditative response for the Prayer of the Faithful, set in the Afemai language. During Mass, the Universal Prayer is a profound moment where the congregation brings its needs, hopes, and sorrows before God. Singing the response in a native tongue often bridges the gap between formal liturgy and personal devotion, allowing the people to voice their petitions with a deep sense of familiarity and cultural resonance.

Charles Onwubuya’s harmonization captures the solemn, pleading nature of intercessory prayer. The arrangement is structured with a clear, flowing melody in the soprano line that carries the main text, while the lower voices provide a rich, supportive texture. The altos sustain gentle humming notes, and the tenors and basses echo the central phrase, creating a layered, rhythmic foundation.
