OBONG TUA NYIN MBOM by Boniface S. A. Inyang — Lyrics
About OBONG TUA NYIN MBOM
"Obong Tua Nyin Mbom" is a gentle, heartfelt setting of the Kyrie in Efik. Sung during the Penitential Rite, it serves as the moment the choir and congregation pause at the beginning of Mass to acknowledge their faults and ask for God's forgiveness. The steady, flowing solfa notation carries a deep sense of reverence that prepares the church for the Liturgy of the Word.
The composer, Boniface S. A. Inyang, captures the essence of contrition in the music's simple, repeating phrases. At the bottom of the handwritten score, a small note quotes Psalm 51: "A broken and contrite heart, O Lord, you will not spurn." This scripture perfectly reflects the mood of the piece, as the voices rise together in the familiar plea of "Christ tua nyin mbom" (Christ, have mercy) before returning to the opening melody.
