NYELUM AKA, O MARIA

"Nyelum Aka, O Maria" is a thoughtful Igbo hymn that bridges Marian devotion with the deep commitments of our faith. While the title is a direct plea to the Blessed Virgin Mary for help, the core of the song is actually about the promises we make at Baptism. The opening verse recalls that sacred day, declaring a firm vow to serve God, listen to the Church, and reject the empty promises of the devil.

In the chorus, the choir turns to Mary, asking for her maternal intercession to help us keep those heavy vows ("kam wedebe ihe m kwere na nkwa"). It is a very human recognition that while our baptismal promises are beautiful, living them out in the real world requires grace and guidance.
