Missa Amara - Nsọ Nsọ Nsọ by Virgilus C. Eze — Lyrics
About Missa Amara - Nsọ Nsọ Nsọ
Here is the Sanctus from Virgilus C. Eze’s "Missa Amara" (Mass of Grace), a vibrant and deeply reverent Igbo setting of the Holy, Holy, Holy. We sing this right after the Preface during the Eucharistic Prayer, joining our voices with the angels to declare God's majesty.
The arrangement uses a wonderful call-and-response dynamic that brings the text to life. The full choir opens with a rhythmic, grounded declaration of "Nsọ" (Holy). Then, the score instructs the choir to drop down to a soft, continuous hum of the refrain while a Tenor soloist takes the lead, soaring over the harmony to sing "Osebụrụwa Chineke nke igwe ndị agha" (Lord God of hosts).
When the choir bursts back in for the Hosanna section, the energy lifts entirely. The repeated, overlapping "Hosana" lines build a sense of joyful celebration that carries the congregation right into the heart of the Mass. It is a beautiful piece to rehearse, especially when balancing the soloist's freedom with the choir's steady, supporting harmony.
