MY PEOPLE (POPULE MEUS)

When we gather on Good Friday for the Veneration of the Cross, few pieces carry the emotional weight of the Reproaches. Jude Nnam’s setting of "My People (Popule Meus)" brings this ancient text to life for our choirs, capturing the profound sorrow of a Saviour speaking directly to His flock. The lyrics walk us through the history of salvation—God leading His people out of Egypt and feeding them with manna—only to ask the heartbreaking question: "How have I offended you? Answer me!"

Musically, the piece contrasts these gentle, sorrowful verses with the powerful, pleading response of the Trisagion: "Holy God! Holy and strong! Holy Immortal God! Have mercy on us!" As the choir sings these lines, it invites the entire congregation into a moment of deep reflection on the cross. It is a staple for Holy Week, demanding a solemn, expressive delivery from every voice part to truly convey the gravity of Christ's sacrifice.
