MAI TSARKI, MAI TSARKI / EDISANA OBONG ABASI by Joe Ekandem, Alex O. Iyinbor — Lyrics
About MAI TSARKI, MAI TSARKI / EDISANA OBONG ABASI
This score brings together two beautiful, rhythmic settings of the Sanctus ("Holy, Holy, Holy") for the Catholic Mass, presented in two distinct Nigerian languages. The first piece, "Mai Tsarki, Mai Tsarki," is composed by Joe Ekandem and sets the traditional text in Hausa. The second, "Edisana Obong Abasi," is an Efik setting by Alex O. Iyinbor.
Both arrangements capture the joyous, triumphant spirit of the heavenly chorus praising God. In the choir loft, these settings are sung during the Liturgy of the Eucharist, right after the Preface. The driving solfa rhythms and bright harmonies invite the entire congregation to join in the "Hosanna," lifting the energy of the Mass as the bread and wine are prepared for consecration.
Having both a Hausa and an Efik setting on a single sheet makes this a wonderful resource for choirs in diverse parishes or those celebrating special cultural feast days, allowing the faithful to proclaim God's holiness in the rich cadences of indigenous languages.
