MABOZA-MABOZA (Zulu)

"Maboza-Maboza" is a vibrant, rhythmic offertory piece that brings an undeniable energy to the Mass. Arranged by Jude Nnam, the score features a driving, repetitive bass introduction that immediately sets a joyful, marching pace for the choir. Although the title notes it as Zulu, the sung verses are actually in Lingala, a language from the Congo, featuring the well-known offertory text "Tobonzeli yo."

The verses lead the congregation in a procession of gifts, mentioning the bread and wine ("mampa na vino") alongside the different groups that make up the church family. As the song progresses, the choir calls out to the fathers ("papa"), mothers ("mama"), priests ("Sango"), sisters ("nyango"), and brothers ("freres"), uniting the entire parish community in the act of offering.

During the liturgy, this piece is a perfect fit for the Offertory procession. The infectious, overlapping "maboza" bassline and the bright call-and-response structure make it a favorite for choirs to sway and step to as the gifts are brought to the altar. It carries a feeling of communal celebration, turning the preparation of the gifts into a moment of shared joy.
