About LITANIÆ SANCTORUM
The Litany of the Saints ("Litaniæ Sanctorum") is one of the oldest and most powerful prayers in the Catholic Church. It is a solemn chant calling upon the intercession of the Virgin Mary, the angels, and the great saints of the faith.
Choirs and congregations sing this during major liturgical moments: the Easter Vigil, baptisms, ordinations, and the dedication of churches. It builds a bridge between the church on earth and the church in heaven, asking those who have gone before us to pray for our needs and the needs of the universal Church.
The repetitive, chanting nature of the melody creates a deeply meditative atmosphere in the sanctuary. As the cantor intones each name and the people respond with "Ora pro nobis" (pray for us) or "Libera nos, Domine" (deliver us, O Lord), the litany gathers spiritual momentum, uniting the voices of the faithful in a continuous wave of prayer.
