L'Innamorato by Giovanni Gastoldi — Lyrics
About L'Innamorato
Giovanni Gastoldi was a prolific composer of madrigals and other secular vocal music in late 16th-century Italy. L'Innamorato, written for SAATB and SSATB voices, is a prime example of the light, charming style that made him so popular. The text celebrates the joy of love, urging listeners to live merrily and honour love’s power. It contrasts the happiness of those who embrace love with the wrath awaiting those who deny it. The repeated "Fa la la" refrains add a playful, dance-like quality, characteristic of the simpler, syllabic settings often found in Gastoldi’s ballettos, which were widely imitated across Europe.
