Libera me Domine by Francesco Cavalli — Lyrics

About Libera me Domine

Francesco Cavalli’s Libera me Domine is a powerful setting of the Requiem text for SATTB choir. The music opens with an immediate sense of gravitas, the voices entering in imitation, creating a dense, resonant texture. The composer skilfully depicts the fear and awe of the Last Judgment, particularly in the sections describing the heavens and earth being shaken and the world being judged by fire. The music rises to a fervent plea for deliverance from eternal death, before offering a prayer for eternal rest and perpetual light for the departed. This is a profoundly moving piece, ideal for services where a dramatic and heartfelt expression of faith is required.
