About La bella Donna
Luca Marenzio's La bella Donna is a secular Italian madrigal for treble, treble, and tenor voices. The music opens with a delicate interplay between the upper voices, setting a mood of lament. The text, a plea from a lover to his 'goddess', expresses his suffering and begs for her favor. He describes how she flees, hides, or falls silent, leaving his heart with no peace. He explains that his every action is for her honor and that his only joy is her pleasure, but still she wages war against him without his fault. He implores courteous ladies and knights to intercede on his behalf with his 'true goddess' so that she may grant him peace.
