ONDU MENYI ALO

"Ondu Menyi Alo" is a solemn and deeply felt setting of the Penitential Rite in the Idoma language. Composed by Jude Nnam, this piece carries the traditional "Lord, have mercy" and "Christ, have mercy" into a gentle, rhythmic choral arrangement. The melody rises and falls with a natural pleading quality, inviting the congregation to pause and seek God's grace at the very beginning of the Mass.

The score itself holds a piece of local church history, originally arranged for a priestly ordination at the Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Pro-Cathedral in Abuja in August 2002. When a choir sings the repeating lines of "Ondu menyi alo" and "Christi menyi alo," the layered harmonies create a warm, enveloping sound. It is a fitting choice for the introductory rites, grounding the worship space in humility and reverence before the celebration of the Eucharist continues.
