KYRIE {IN THREE NIGERIAN LANGUAGES} by Chibi — Lyrics
About KYRIE {IN THREE NIGERIAN LANGUAGES}
This unique setting of the Penitential Rite beautifully reflects the diverse voices of the Nigerian Church by weaving together three major indigenous languages. Instead of a single language, the composer assigns each invocation of the Kyrie to a different tongue, creating a powerful expression of unity in worship.
The piece opens with the first "Lord, have mercy" sung in Hausa ("Ya Ubangiji kayi mana jin kai"). The choir then transitions into Yoruba for the "Christ, have mercy" ("Kristi saanu fun wa"), before concluding the final petition in Igbo ("Onyenw'anyi mee ebere").
For a mixed congregation, singing this Kyrie is a deeply moving experience. It allows different parishioners to hear their own mother tongue during the Mass while joining together in a shared plea for God's mercy. It is a wonderful choice for national feast days, cultural Sundays, or any solemn Mass that celebrates the universal nature of the Church.
