About Kyrie (16th cent. English)
This Kyrie setting from the 16th century English tradition offers a clear and devotional expression of the ancient plea for mercy. The texture is largely homophonic, allowing the directness of the Greek text to shine through. The interplay of voices is straightforward, creating a sonorous and balanced sound that would have been typical of its time. Its setting of the familiar Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison text is devotional and unassuming, suitable for liturgical use. The composer remains anonymous, a common feature of much Renaissance sacred music, yet the piece stands as a fine example of English chant-based polyphony from the period.
