Angus Dei :- Kimeme Masumu Yansi

"Kimeme Masumu Yansi" is a vibrant setting of the Agnus Dei, brought to Nigerian choir lofts from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Arranged by Vincent Obi, this piece carries the familiar "Lamb of God" text in Kikongo, offering a rhythmic and deeply felt plea for mercy and peace during the Mass.

The arrangement opens with a steady, grounding bass line that establishes the groove before the sopranos enter with the soaring main melody, "E Kimeme ya Kikatula masumu yansi." As the piece moves into the response, the choir layers the repeated cry of "Kenda" (mercy). The moving parts alternate between "fila beto" (have mercy on us) for the first two times, and "pesa beto" (grant us peace) for the final time, following the traditional three-part structure of the Lamb of God.

It is a wonderful choice for the breaking of the bread, bringing a sense of solemnity mixed with African rhythmic warmth. The repetitive, layered structure makes it easy for the choir to internalize the prayer, creating a unified moment of reverence as the congregation prepares for Communion.
