JOY TO THE WORLD! by Lowell Mason — Lyrics
About JOY TO THE WORLD!
"Joy to the World!" is one of the most triumphant and widely sung carols in the church's repertoire. With its bright, descending opening scale, it instantly announces the arrival of the Christmas season. In our parishes, this hymn is a staple for carol services and Christmas morning Masses, carrying a spirit of absolute jubilation as the congregation celebrates the birth of the Saviour.
The verses call on all of creation—heaven, nature, fields, and floods—to echo the glad tidings. This particular arrangement features a soaring soprano descant that floats above the familiar melody, adding a layer of festive brilliance to the final verses. When the choir reaches the resounding climax of "And heav'n and nature sing," the layered voices create a powerful, echoing effect that lifts the entire church in praise.
It serves perfectly as an Entrance or Recessional hymn during the Nativity of the Lord, sending the faithful out with a renewed sense of hope. The message is clear and enduring: the King has come, and every heart is called to prepare Him room.
