Jodie - Kuchi Kuchi by Joy EseOghene Odiete (Jodie), arr. Jude Nwankwo — Lyrics
About Jodie - Kuchi Kuchi
"Kuchi Kuchi (Oh Baby! Oh Baby)" is a charming choral adaptation of Joy EseOghene Odiete’s beloved Nigerian pop hit. Arranged here for a solo voice and SSA (Soprano 1, Soprano 2, Alto) choir by Jude Nwankwo, it captures the pure, overwhelming tenderness of a mother’s love for her newborn. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of waking up to a baby's lovely face, with cheeks like "butter and honey," and the supernatural bond that ties parent and child together.
While we usually focus on sacred music for the Mass, Nigerian Catholic choirs are often called upon to perform at social events, receptions, and special choral concerts. As noted on the score, this arrangement was originally crafted for a "Chorale Goes Pop" concert at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, making it a perfect, lighthearted addition to a choir's secular repertoire. The solo line carries the sweet, conversational melody, while the women's voices provide a warm, rhythmic backing of hums and playful "kuchi kuchi" echoes.
It is an especially touching piece for Mother's Day celebrations, family thanksgiving events, or any gathering where the choir wants to share a message of life and family joy. The gentle, swaying rhythm and affectionate words make it a joy to rehearse and a guaranteed crowd-pleaser that brings a smile to everyone listening.
