About Jesu nostra redemptio
This Latin hymn expresses intense devotion to Jesus as the redeemer of mankind. The text petitions Christ to overcome evil with his mercy, to release captives from hell, and to grant eternal joy as reward. The composer William Byrd sets this moving devotional text for four voices (AATT). It is a sacred motet, part of his output for the Latin liturgy, typical of the genre's expressive power and complex contrapuntal writing.
