About Jesu, dein' Seel
Melchior Franck was a prolific composer of sacred music in Germany during the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. This SATB setting of Jesu, dein' Seel' is a German hymn that draws its text from devotional verses focused on the passion of Christ. The lyrics express a deep personal plea for spiritual sanctification, strength, and protection through the sacrifice of Jesus. The verses move from a desire for inner cleansing and strengthening by Christ's blood and wounds, to a prayer for protection against enemies and a welcome into eternal life. The final stanza articulates a longing for eternal praise and joy in God's presence. Franck's music would have served to heighten the fervent pleas and assurances found within the devotional text.
