Jerúsalem, surge

Pomponio Nenna was a composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. This responsory, Jerúsalem, surge, is written for SATB choir and is in Latin. The text is a sorrowful reflection on the crucifixion of Christ and the suffering of Jerusalem. It calls upon the city to rise, cast off its garments of joy, and clothe itself in sackcloth and ashes, shedding tears day and night. The music would have been intended for use within the services of the Roman Catholic Church, likely as part of the liturgy for Holy Week.
