About Je suis aymé de la plus belle
Thomas Crecquillon’s Je suis aymé de la plus belle is a secular chanson for SSTTB voices, dating from the Renaissance. The music opens with imitative entries, weaving the five parts together in a rich contrapuntal texture before opening out into homophonic passages. The text, in French, celebrates the singer’s love for the most beautiful woman under the heavens. He declares he will defend her honour against all envious tongues, and imagines that even Cupid himself, were he to witness her grace, would fall in love with her. The goddess Venus is invoked, praised for inspiring such noble love.
