Je me contente

This lively chanson by Tielman Susato, Je me contente, is set for three voices (soprano, tenor, and bass). Its opening texture is imitative, with the voices entering one after another in close succession. The music generally moves in homophonic passages, creating a clear and engaging sound. The French text expresses a decision to withdraw from love, finding contentment in patience rather than the lingering hope of unfulfilled desire. It’s a charming example of secular Renaissance part-music, perfect for adding a bright and spirited touch to a programme.
